Cisco is making a bold play for public cloud customers, claiming that its new modular storage servers are not just a match for public cloud, but are better.
With the new UCS S-Series, the networking giant claims that the first in the family series, the UCS S3260 Storage Server, lowers the total cost of ownership by over 50% when compared to public cloud.
Drawing on the surge in data intensive workloads and the introduction of new applications like video analytics, diagnostic imaging and streaming analytics, Cisco argues that traditional static IT infrastructure no longer works in a world of continuous insight and innovation, while public cloud storage solutions can become expensive as data sets grow quickly and unpredictably.
The UCS S3260 Storage Server is the hardware cure for businesses trying to scale rapidly in the world of big data and IoT, with Cisco claiming that the server betters traditional options in a number of ways – reducing CapEX by up to 34%, lowering ongoing management by up to 80%, reducing cabling by up to 70%, taking up 60% less space and consuming up to 59% less power.
The UCS S3260 provides a wide range of capacity and performance options with up to 600 Terabytes of storage capacity per system, frictionless scaling up to Petabytes with UCS Manager, cache acceleration, and unified I/O connectivity for any type of data storage. With these capabilities, Cisco claims, organisations can move from inactive data in warehouses and clouds to dynamic applications on a cloud-scale platform with high-speed processing to activate, analyse and act on data in real time.
Matt Eastwood, SVP, Enterprise Infrastructure and DataCentre, IDC said: “Organizations are transforming themselves digitally and as they do so they are stressing the need to bring their compute and data resources closer together. Next gen applications including big data analytics remain top IT objectives and as data becomes increasingly strategic, core storage infrastructure is being redefined in software as a server workload.”
The company also announced the next generation of its ONE Enterprise Cloud Suite, which now delivers hybrid cloud for automation across the entire IT organisation and user base.

All additions are part of Cisco’s evolving next generation data centre architecture which enables enterprise organisations to incorporate the best aspects of cloud and on-premise data centres.
The company’s strategy is to provide a data centre architecture that enables customers to analyse, simplify, automate and protect their data and applications, known as the ASAP data centre.
Cisco also developed AMP Endpoint security to enable a faster approach to detection and prevention.
