Charter selects Cisco’s cloud services to boost video platform

The networking firm is supplying key products for Charter's upcoming video system.

By Amy-Jo Crowley

Cisco has linked up with broadband provider Charter Communications to supply its key products for Charter’s upcoming video system.

The networking firm, which is a main provider of set-top boxes, will provide its cloud-based security suite and digital rights management (DRM) technology to support video services on IP devices for Charter’s Worldbox.

Charter’s Worldbox acts as a thin client that can be update via cloud software regardless of the set-top box used by customers.

Cisco said it will also supply a share of Charter’s Worldbox volume and CableCARD boxes until Charter moves all its existing systems to an open downloadable security suite this year.

Tom Rutledge, president and CEO of Charter, said: "Cisco shares Charter’s vision of the future of network architecture, where our network’s intelligence is located in the cloud rather than in devices at the edge."

"We are excited that Cisco will be a key supplier of the Charter Worldbox, and that their Downloadable Security Solution and Digital Rights Management solutions will be part of Charter’s next-generation, cloud-based video solution."

Cisco’s chairman and CEO John Chambers added: "Charter’s new video solution, featuring cloud-driven video experiences offered across many devices will be a huge win for Charter subscribers."
