AWS re:Invent kicked off with a stream of product announcements from hardware to cloud database migrations.
To help you stay on top of the big releases CBR has compiled a list.
1. Amazon QuickSight
In what represents a move into the Business Intelligence market, AWS pitched its service as costing one-tenth of traditional BI solutions.
Cloud powered and offering visualisations, analytics tools and scalability. It uses a parallel in-memory calculation engine, which it calls SPICE, to perform advanced calculations and render visualisations.
The service aims to make BI easy for all users at a lower cost than traditional offerings.
2. AWS Database Migration Service
Heading into the database market, the cloud provider released database tools and services that are designed to help enterprises migrate production databases to AWS.
The service allows customers to migrate from Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL and PostgreSQL to AWS. It offers a Schema Conversion Tool that the company says makes it easy to switch database engines.

Again the company is aiming at price being a differentiator, saying that customers can migrate a 1TB database from on-premise to AWS for $3.
3. Amazon RDS for MariaDB
MariaDB is now available as a managed service on AWS, offering up t 6TB of storage and 30,000 IOPS.
Amazon RDS offers support for six database engines and allows for customers to run relational databases without the need of on-premises systems.
Customers will be able to deploy MariaDB as a database through the AWS Management Console, with RDS handling the administrative tasks involved in managing a database. This includes software installation, storage management and back-ups for disaster recovery.
4. Accenture AWS Business Group
The creation of this group means that Accenture will help to migrate application, development and management services and solutions to move businesses to AWS.
The business group will offer integrated consulting and technology solutions.
The two companies will work together and invest in the multi-year development of new services and technologies that include application migration and development, cloud applications, analytics and Big Data solutions.
5. Snowball
This service was leaked earlier in the week but it is basically a piece of hardware to transport data from a customer’s data centre to AWS.
It offers up to 50TB per box and aims to tackle the time it takes to upload data. The belief is that Internet connections aren’t not up to the job of quickly transferring vast amounts of data.
The box is tamper-resistant, encrypted with end-to-end 256 bit encryption and Trusted Platform Module.
It uses E Ink shipping labels which are automatically updated with the shipping address and would cost around $200 per job.
6. Amazon Kinesis Firehose
This is designed to make it easy to load and store-real time, streaming data in AWS.
It is a fully managed service for loading streaming data into AWS, currently available on S3 and Redshift.
This will allow customers to build applications that collect, process and analyse streaming data. IT captures data from hundreds of thousands of different sources and load them into AWS in real-time.
7. Teradata database for production workloads on AWS
The Teradata Database has been made available on AWS to support production workloads. It will be available on EC2.
The aim of this is to offer wider accessibility to the data warehouse and analytics solution, closer proximity of the database to data sources and partner software in the cloud and self-service provisioning.
8. SUSE Linux for SAP on AWS
Customers will be able to use their existing subscription to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications, to develop and test SAP workloads on AWS.
The benefit of this is that users will be able to use the flexible AWS infrastructure in order to match changing needs of workloads.
It includes a technical preview of high availability resource agents for deployments of the SAP HANA platform. This means that HANA instances can failover between AWS availability zones.
9. Inspector
This is an automated service that will look for potential security and compliance vulnerabilities.
The service will generate reports on how your security looks, which means users can see what assessments have been done, what findings there were and what has been done to fix any issues.
It works on an application-by-application basis and will analyse their behaviour to identify security issues.
10. Equinix pipeline to AWS
A bundle of tools and services is on offer that aim to make it easier to use Equinix as a relay station for hybrid cloud operations.
The purpose of this is to speed an AWS customer’s workload into the cloud, this is done through the AWS Direct Connect Converged Infrastructure and the Equinix Cloud Exchange service.
The DCCI will offer a fibre-optic line between an Equinix facility and an Amazon data centre.
The Cloud Exchange is a virtualised network management system that allows a customer to be assigned a port and route its workloads through it to a different cloud.
