AWS hails cloud wins

Airline and agency shift workloads cloudwards.

By James Nunns

Amazon Web Services has been busy getting companies and organisations to sign up to its cloud services.

AWS has made an agreement with the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to explore sustainable models for increasing of open data that is made available via the cloud.

The company is also being used by Qantas to migrate its website into AWS’ cloud platform, as it looks to shift workloads into the cloud.

Chris Taylor, CTO, Qantas, was full of confidence about the deal when speaking at the AWS Summit in Sydney, "For me, as an IT manager, the line of site of governance that I get in real time with that platform is transformational."

"For Qantas, it’s a platform for innovation, meaning testing, learning, trialling, and finding out if it works or doesn’t work, and be able to industrialise what does work."

Amazon’s work with NOAA will utilise some of its collaborators, including; The Weather Company, Esri and Planet OS to look for ways to push more of NOAA’s data to the cloud. The purpose of this is to help drive economic and social good, according to the AWS blog.

Jeff Barr, Chief Evangelist for AWS, wrote on the company blog: "This data can be used to build applications that protect life, health, and property by keeping our oceans healthy, our coastline communities safe and resilient, and more."
