Amazon pulls plug on two services

News: Paypal rival and local deals service to end.

By CBR Staff Writer

In a cost cutting move Amazon is closing the daily deals service Amazon Local and payments processing business Amazon Local Register.

Amazon Local was launched in 2011. It will stop its daily deal services from 18 December. The company said purchased vouchers will not be affected by the change and remain valid as per to their terms.

Users can continue to purchase deals at Amazon Local until the specified time.

Amazon Local Register, which is similar to Square and PayPal Here will fully shut down from 1 February 2016 and will not take new customers.

An Amazon spokesperson said: "We’ve learned a great deal from the daily deals business and will look for ways to apply these lessons in the future as we continue to innovate on behalf of our customers and merchants."

It was revealed last month that Amazon is preventing rival media streaming devices from Google and Apple from being sold on its site.

In an email sent to marketplace sellers, the e-commerce giant cited the incompatibility of Apple’s Apple TV and Google’s Chromecast with Amazon’s own Prime Video service as reasons for the ban.
