5 major product releases from VMworld 2016

List: Containers, flash storage, & OpenStack all in the spotlight at VMworld 2016.

By James Nunns

VMware’s annual conference VMworld 2016 gives the company and its partners an opportunity to reveal the latest and greatest technologies that they have been working on.

This year has been no different with a number of product announcements coming out from the show, which ran between 28th August and September 1st.

CBR rounds-up the major releases from the show.

1. vSphere Integrated Containers

VMware revealed two additional capabilities for its vSphere Integrated Containers, which is designed to help IT operations teams to provide a Docker compatible interface to their app teams.

The introduction of open source software called Admiral and Harbor aims to provide customers with key registry and management functionality in order to support production-grade containerised applications.

Admiral is a built in container management portal for VMware vSphere integrated containers that can be used to accelerate application delivery, while Harbor is based on Docker Distribution to add features such as user management and access control, policy-based image replication, support for audit and logs, a RESTful API for integration, and others.

Basically these additions are designed to help customers to use containers without having to re-architect their existing infrastructure.

To help boost its container strategy, the company is also planning to collaborate with ecosystem partners in order to validate third-party solutions with VMware’s vSphere Integrated Containers.

2. Tegile IntelliFlash

VMware puts a lot of stock in its wider ecosystem so it is no surprise that Tegile, a provider of multi-tiered flash storage arrays, would take the opportunity to launch IntelliFlash Cloud Platform.

The rack scale all-flash platform is designed for companies that are looking for the cost benefits of cloud and the reliability and control of on-premises storage, the company said.

The offering has multi-controller clusters and non-volatile memory express (NVMe), in order to reduce network latency.

IntelliFlash CP is said to stitch together multiple controllers to provide the ability to scale out horizontally and vertically across protocols. Controllers will be shared across a global namespace and have shared access to multiple grades of media that data is placed upon.

Customers will have access to the company’s IntelliCare customer care programme to help sweeten the deal.

3. VMware Integrated OpenStack 3

This is the latest release of the company’s OpenStack distribution, which is now based on the latest Mitaka release.

Like others operating in the OpenStack ecosystem, VMware has gone for the approach of aiming to make clouds simpler and more cost-effective. While it is also now allowing customers to use existing VMware vSphere workloads in an API-driven OpenStack cloud.

Features and enhancements include simplified configuration for Nova compute service, and streamlines Keystone identity service, which is now a one-step process for setting up the identity management features of a cloud network.

The company says that the Integrated OpenStack 3 version will reduce the infrastructure and related costs that are required to power a production-ready OpenStack cloud, thanks to an optimised management control plane.

This management control plane is said to be capable of allowing IT teams to build small OpenStack clouds in as little as 15 minutes.
