Under pressure from the US, the Ministry for Posts & Telecommunications has relaxed its restrictions on the use of proprietary protocols in communications networks, opening the way for international value-added network companies, including IBM and GE Information Services, to enter the Japanese market: the ministry now says that as long as X25 is used between networks, any protocol may be used within the network; the climbdown by the Japanese is expected to satisfy an angry US Commerce Department.
