Clifford steps into CEO role at Micro Focus

Ex-Symbian boss replaces Kelly

By Steve Evans

UK legacy modernisation vendor Micro Focus has announced the appointment of Nigel Clifford as its new CEO. He will start his new role on May 1.

Clifford was previously boss at Symbian Limited. While in the role of CEO there the firm was acquired by mobile phone giant Nokia. Clifford led the integration between the two companies before becoming senior vice president strategy, technology & architecture, devices at Nokia. He has also held roles at BT, Cable & Wireless and Tertio.

Clifford replaces previous CEO Stephen Kelly, who resigned suddenly in September last year after three years in the job. His departure came after a busy few months for the firm last summer. In June 2009, Micro Focus acquired Compuware’s Testing and ASQ (Automated Software Quality) Business for $80m and swiftly followed that up with the acquisition of Borland, a provider of application lifecycle management tools.

In July 2009, the company released its Make Britain Great Again Technology Manifesto, an ambitious plan to create 250,000 new technology jobs in the UK within the next 10 years. It described how technology has a key role to play in dragging the UK out of the recession.

“Nigel has extensive leadership experience having been a chief executive of various companies for more than 14 years, nine of which have been in the software industry,” said Micro Focus chairman Kevin Loosemore. “Nigel’s experience of large scale and complex environments mean he is ideally qualified to lead the company through its next phase of development and growth.”
