We’re quite happy with the Alphapage name the French have chosen for their international paging network – they have a certain je ne sais quoi in these matters outre Manche – but we are made deeply uncomfortable by the one dreamed up by the Germans for theirs (CI No 928): we were always brought up to believe that you simply didn’t start a German word with a C in polite society otherwise they’d have simply called the guy Caesar instead of sticking that ridiculous helmet on him and calling him the Kaiser – so what are the German Kinder to make of the fact that they’re now expected to page their Freunde in London over something their supposed betters are calling Cityruf? The Liebchen won’t even know how to pronounce the thing.
