Citrix Systems Inc is to improve the sound quality of its remote meetings services by building in IP multimedia processing software to sharpen the audio signals in integrated VoIP and PSTN audio conferencing.

By incorporating technology from Global IP Solutions Inc into its GoToMeeting and GoToWebinar services, Citrix said it would be able to offer a new combination of high quality VoIP, phone and web conferencing features in online meetings and web events of all sizes.

The companies have cut a deal to adopt and adapt the GIPS Voice ConferenceEngine and VoiceEngine systems to improve audio mixing and processing of the online services. Used on IP networks, it will help kill delays, jitter, packet loss, background noise and echo.

GoToMeeting is a way of sharing PC or Mac desktop resources during online meetings and lets participants swap a file or application, or give keyboard and mouse control to another attendee. The web-hosted service comes bundled with integrated VoIP and phone conferencing, as well as a function that can be used to record meetings for future use or reference.

GoToWebinar comes with GoToMeeting, but is intended as a channel for presenting, training or demonstrating to large audiences online.

Demand for unified communications and collaboration systems is on the up slowly, as organisations look for means of reducing operating costs and offsetting travel expenses, and vendors are working to overcome resistance to the technology by improving the overall experience.
