Just days after ChangeBASE was acquired by Quest Software another application migration vendor has been snapped up – App-DNA has been acquired by Citrix Systems.

Announced at its Synergy event currently taking place in Barcelona, Citrix said the deal will help its desktop transformation strategy; specifically the App-DNA AppTitude product that enables business to analyse their application portfolio before a desktop migration project can begin.

Citrix claims that as enterprises move away from a traditional PC infrastructure to embracing a more mobile workforce, desktop virtualisation becomes a much more important component as workers need to access their applications and data from anywhere in the world using a wide variety of devices.

The migration process as Citrix sees it has three different phases: assess, design and deploy. The App-DNA AppTitude platform can help with the first of these by analysing an organisation’s application portfolio to test for any compatibility issues when moving to a new desktop infrastructure, whether it is Windows 7, virtualised or something different.

AppTitude can then provide a guide for IT departments detailing any compatibility issues and how long they may take to fix. In some cases compatibility issues can be fixed by AppTitude. The final part of the process is deploy. Citrix says AppTitude can deploy applications through, "automated packaging of applications in Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI), Microsoft App-V or Citrix XenApp formats."

"Customers want to move to virtual desktops faster but often don’t know how to evolve their application portfolio. App-DNA provides customers a clear roadmap and the ability to automate the migration of their applications to new virtual environments," said Bob Schultz, group vice president and general manager, Enterprise Desktops and Applications at Citrix.

"As part of a complete desktop transformation strategy with a proven methodology for deploying virtual desktops across all users, Citrix and App-DNA together help customers more quickly realise the business benefits and operating efficiencies of creating a virtual computing environment," he added.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. Citrix expects the acquisition to close during the fourth quarter.

Earlier this week it was announced that Quest Software had acquired a rival of App-DNA in ChangeBASE.

The theme of moving away from a traditional desktop environment to the post-PC era played a big part of VMware’s VMworld event held last week in Copenhagen. The company demoed mobile virtualisation with two separate identities running on a single device – one for work and one for personal content.
