In the burgeoning market for push technology alliances may well prove to be a decisive factor, so that Palo Alto-based unit Tibco Software Inc looks to have done well to win over Cisco Systems Inc to purchase a minority equity stake in the Reuters subsidiary. As part of the deal Cisco and Tibco are to jointly develop what they call an open standard for delivering subscriber-sensitive or push network capabilities. Cisco says the work will develop the new bandwidth-conserving capability within its Cisco IOS software. The two companies will also continue their work including advancements on the patented publish/subscribe networking begun in late 1996. To that end, Cisco had previously licensed Tibco’s TIB technology. Also as part of the deal, Edward R. Kozel, chief technical officer at Cisco, will become a member of Tibco Software’s board. The deal follows Cisco’s acquisition of digital subscriber line developer Telesend Inc (CI No 3,129) and its minority investment in wireless LAN technology specialists RadioLAN Inc (CI No 3,119).
