Cisco Systems Inc has announced further reorganization throughout the company in line with its transition from a product-based to a more market-based structure. Started in September last year, the latest move in the reorganization is to pool its research and development and solutions marketing under three Lines of Business – Service Provider, Enterprise and Small/Medium Business. Each Line of Business team will define and implement both market and operational strategies that will enable them to deliver end-to-end systems and services to their target markets. Each comprises a product business unit, responsible for system development and product management, network management units, and line of business marketing. The Service Provider organisation, headed by Don Listwin, will provide end-to-end networking systems for service provider customers, including telecommunication carriers, Internet service providers, cable and wireless companies. Its emphasis will be on delivering next-generation services of particular interest to service providers. The Enterprise Line of Business, led by Mario Mazzola, will provide large corporate and institutional customers with end-to-end, scalable networking systems that exploit the convergence of switching and routing technologies, plus comprehensive network management, security and support for multi-service applications. The Small/Medium Business organisation, led by Howard Charney, will deliver end-to-end networking solutions for small to medium-sized customers, with a focus on easy-to-use, integrated solutions that combine software and multiple products. Cisco is not the only company taking this approach, last month 3Com Corp announced that it was to restructure into three industry-focused business units (CI No 3,143).
