The company makes two network devices called the Guard XT and Detector XT, which can learn what healthy network traffic looks like, then filter suspect traffic for deeper analysis and blocking.

Cisco, which was already an investor in Riverhead, said the company will be absorbed into its Internet Switching Business Unit and that its network-based technology will complement its host-based Cisco Security Agent.

The deal fits in with the recent trend for networking vendors to expand into security through acquisition. Cisco has made several purchases over the last year, and rival Juniper Networks recently got into the firewall market by saying it will acquire NetScreen Technologies.
