Cisco invests in Equator Technologies

Neither company has disclosed the size of the investment.

Equator develops programmable system-on-chip processors designed for video streaming and image processing applications across a range of consumer and enterprise end markets. It offers the BSP family of Broadband Signal Processor chips, the iMMediaTools software development toolkit, media libraries and reference platforms for development and deployment of video streaming and video processing systems.

Its technology is used to make broadcast-quality video streaming possible in MPEG-2, Windows Media 9 Series, RealVideo and other media formats used in consumer devices.

The company itself was founded way back in 1996 and its first products began shipping in 1998. It has subsequently delivered four generations of devices that power videoconferencing, surveillance, broadcast, and consumer entertainment products from companies such as Polycom, Sony Corp. and Samsung Electronics.
