Buying yet again, Cisco Systems Inc, San Jose has paid an undisclosed number of new shares for Cupertino start-up Telesend Inc; the company’s product line will be incorporated into Cisco’s Wide Area Network business unit. Telesend is the developer of the Integrated Services Digital Network Digital Subscriber Line for providing highspeed Internet access to help relieve congestion on telephone networks. Cisco plans to integrate the IDSL technology into its 90i wide area network access product, which it says will provide carriers with a more cost-effective way to deliver high- speed data services for Internet and intranet access at up to 128Kbps. Cisco claims the 90i is unique because it turns existing equipment in nearly all10,000 North American telephone exchanges into high-capacity frame multiplexers designed to handle large volumes of Internet traffic, providing the lowest cost method available for offering high-capacity digital Internet access by making use of existing installed switches.
