Cisco boosts edge routers capacity

Telstra to deploy Cisco ASR 9000 series as their carrier ethernet platform

By CBR Staff Writer

Network equipment maker Cisco said that it that it is doubling the density of its Aggregation Services Router 9000 Series. It is adding a new single-slot 16 x 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GE) line card, delivering over 100 Gbps.

The company claims that the new line card in combination with the Cisco ASR 9000’s scalability, helps enable the platform to lead the industry in density and scalability. The new 10GE line card is designed for up to 400G-per-slot capability.

To address the growth for video and mobile internet, the Cisco ASR 9000 continues to add capacity and capabilities specifically engineered to help service providers handle current and future demands, the company said.

For video and mobile internet growth, the ASR 9000 offers the capacity to grow to 320 x 10GE, or 32 x 100 GE per system. The company said that the ASR 9000 is designed to deliver non-stop video experience and a reduced carbon footprint.

The Cisco ASR 9000 incorporates the Cisco Advanced Video Services Module (AVSM), which enables terabytes of streaming capacity at the aggregation edge while simultaneously offering content caching, ad insertion, fast channel change and error correction.

The company said that the ASR 9000 line cards are SyncE-ready, which means that they inherently work with cell site routers to deliver mobile handoffs. This is expected to result in saving cost on dedicated slots for additional synchronisation cards.

Cisco has won a deal with Telstra to deploy ASR 9000 series as their carrier Ethernet platform supporting bandwidth-intensive, content-based services such as video. The ASR 9000 deployment in the edge of their network complements the existing deployment of the Cisco CRS-1 Carrier Routing System (CRS) router in the core.

Praveen Akkiraju, vice president and general manager of carrier routing business unit at Cisco, said: Since we launched the Cisco ASR 9000, it has been deployed in a wide range of edge applications from carrier Ethernet, IP RAN, and consumer and business services. This breadth of capability, coupled with its scale and Cisco IOS-XR, ensures that the Cisco ASR 9000 is the premier edge solution for service providers.
