Cisco Systems Inc has announced a new remote access server, the AS5300, marketed at internet service providers and large corporations. The AS5300 has a 150MHz RISC CPU, and aggregates 120 simultaneous modem or ISDN B channel calls. It also supports the Cisco network operating system, IOS, that has data encryption, multilink-PPP, data compression, and virtual network tunnelling features included. Cisco is also using technology from its acquisition last year of modem maker Telebit Corp, with the use of Telebit’s modem ISDN channel aggregation technology, which enables ISDN calls to be aggregated on the same ports as modem calls. The Cisco AS5300 ships in November, costing $45,000 per unit.
