Cisco has announced its intention to acquire Jasper Technologies, a startup which makes software for connecting internet devices.

It helps enterprises and service providers launch, manage and make money from IoT services on a global scale.

With Jasper’s IoT technology, companies can connect with anything from cars, to jet engines and implanted pacemakers. The technology uses cellular networks of top global service providers and helps manage these devices using its Service as a Software (SaaS) platform.

Managing IoT devices is a complicated task in itself. It requires connecting and securing millions of devices simultaneously and collecting data from those devices.

Jasper has simplified this process and made it easier to manage IoT devices. It has automated the management of IoT devices, enabling large enterprises to create new business models that transform products into connected services and help in generating more revenues.

With this acquisition, Cisco gains access to a complete IoT solution that is interoperable across devices and works with IoT service providers, application developers and environment of partners.

Cisco will also build upon Jasper’s IoT service platform to enhance it, with new IoT services, enterprise Wi-Fi, security and advanced analytics.

Cisco CEO, Chuck Robbins said: "I am excited about the opportunity for Cisco and Jasper to accelerate how customers recognize the value of the Internet of Things.

"Together, we can enable service providers, enterprises and the broader ecosystem to connect, automate, manage, and analyse billions of connected things, across any network, creating new revenue streams and opportunities."

Jasper CEO, Jahangir Mohammed said: "IoT has become a business imperative across the globe."

"Enterprises in every industry need integrated solutions that give them complete visibility and control over their connected services, while also being simple to implement, manage and scale.

"By coming together, Jasper and Cisco will help mobile operators and enterprises accelerate their IoT success."

According to the proposed acquisition, Jasper’s present CEO, Jahangir Mohammed, will run the new IoT Business Unit under the leadership of Cisco, IoT and Collaboration Technology group, senior vice president and general manager, Rowan Trollope.

The acquisition is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2016.
