Cirrus Logic Inc of Milpitas, California has an integrated circuit that offers manufacturers of Winchester disks the ability to double the capacity of their drives without increasing their costs: the CL-SH360 Disk Controller for MS-DOS boxes enables the density of a single-platter 3.5 drive to go to 80Mb from 40Mb with no change in heads or media; samples will be ready by third quarter, with volume production at the end of the year.
