In an ostensibly bizarre decision, Cipher Data Products Inc in San Diego has reportedly cancelled plans for its Optimem unit to introduce a 5.25 erasable optical disk drive this year, saying that its top priority is to make the optical disk subsidiary profitable. It justifies the decision by saying there was less demand than expected for the product – but since few knew Optimem had an erasable drive close to launch, that does not ring true.
