UK CIOs’ boardroom influence has grown but most still lack a seat at the top table, according to research.

Innovation has also become a key part of the CIO’s job during the economic turmoil of the last 12 months, according to a survey from Coleman Parkes for Salesforce.com. With the focus shifted towards delivering business innovation, time spent on routine, keep-the-lights-on activities has dropped from 62% to 30% this year.

A commanding 92% of survey respondents said their opinions held more sway with the board today compared to 12 months ago, but only 14% said they were board members and only half reported to a board member.

Dominic Shine, group CIO of Reed Exhibitions said: “I don’t get any credit for delivery of IT infrastructure or operations – people just assume that that stuff should work.  My business expects me to drive innovation to help them to deliver solutions to our customers faster, with higher quality and lower cost.
