The Berlin International Film Festival has partnered with Colt to digitally distribute films to cinemas across the city.
500 terabytes of film content from ‘the Berlinale’ will be transferred from a data centre to 16 film venues, using Colt’s fibre network.
Entrants can also directly submit their entries to this ‘digital heart’ in digital format, with an enhanced 10 gigabit internet connection facilitating fast and convenient submissions.
The information delivery platform’s new infrastructure was trialled in the pre-selection process for the festival. Until recently, the Berlinale film office had been used for storing films; the function will now be moved to the Colt data centre, which is more secure.
The 10-day festival, taking place from 5-15 February, is the largest public festival in the world and will attract 500,000 visitors.
"The digitisation of the film industry is almost complete and the Berlinale festival has remained ahead of the curve with Colt’s support. We have faced enormous technical and logistical challenges, in particular the acceptance and distribution of digitally produced films with ever larger amounts of data," says festival director Dieter Kosslick.
He added: "With Colt as a partner, we are well equipped: the infrastructure and services from Colt and the broadcast expertise of its team are essential for making the film festival a success and ensuring film fans can fully enjoy their visit to the Berlinale."
