The Centre for International Co-operation in Computerisation, CICC, which was established by the Japanese government to provide education and assistance for South-East Asian countries wanting to automate their government departments, has published the initial results of its machine translation project, which began in 1987: Sigma project workstations from Toshiba Corp, Sharp Corp, Oki Electric Industrial Co, NEC Corp, Hitachi Ltd, Fujitsu Ltd and Mitsubishi Electric Corp are being used in the project which initially aims at machine translation between Japanese, Chinese, Indonesian, Malay and Thai; the intermediate language dictionary currently contains 25,000 words, but one in development will contain 250,000 words, and will be able to translate at a rate of 35 words a second.
