French real time operating system technology house Chorus Systemes SA is teaming up with internet start-up Novita Communications Inc to deliver multimedia capabilities to users of the new generation of internet appliances set to come onto the market. The companies will work together on the understanding of a technology alliance, combining Chorus’s Chorus/JaZZ and Novita’s Java-based multimedia e-mail software, Novita mail. The two plan to develop new applications such as digital mail, digital greetings and digital photography which can be integrated into low cost internet appliances such as set-top boxes and internet phones. The Chorus communications-orientated real time operating system supports Java within 2Mb of Read Only Memory. Novita is a privately-held company from Sunnyvale, California that was founded in March 1996. Chorus and Novita expect the internet appliances with multimedia features that will result from their alliance, to be available by the end of the year.
