Southborough, Massachusetts-based Chipcom Corp has launched two ‘economy’ versions of its ONcore Switching System. The 10-slot model is designed for horizontal workgroups and includes all the features of the existing 17-slot ‘advanced’ model, announced in January but in a smaller package created for fewer users. According to the company, it will link more than 200 users to Ethernet, Token Ring and Fibre Distributed Data Interface networks, as well as to Asynchronous Transfer Mode and local area network packet switching networks. The 17-slot ‘basic’ version is essentially the same as the company’s existing 17-slot advanced model, but minus the Token Ring port-switching backplane. It comes with the company’s TriChannel Architecture backplane, but without the ONcore Switching System’s Token Ring RingChannel backplane. It also supports all ONcore System Ethernet switching modules, as well as all ONline System Ethernet, Token Ring and Fibre Distributed Data Interface modules. Future migration capability is provided via a future switching backplane that supports multi-gigabit packet and cell switching. No news on pricing or shipping dates yet.
