The new so-called Secure ID Coalition includes card makers Gemalto and Oberthur. Together, the companies said they plan to educate policymakers at the US National Conference of State Legislators. They will call for best practices and standards in security ID info management programs, said the coalition.

While contactless smart cards can further improve system reliability and operating efficiencies, they require tailored security practices to protect confidential personal information contained on the cards and in central databases, said the coalition, in a statement.

The companies said they would work with public and private entities to design secure ID management products to protect citizen privacy.
