The prestigious Chinese Academy of Sciences, which has a controlling shareholding in the Legend Computer Group, has announced a joint venture with AT&T Labs of the US aimed at developing a two-way English-Chinese speech translation prototype. The five-year program, to be based in Beijing, aims at coming up with a prototype that allows for simultaneous computer translation of several thousand words.
