Demand for personal computers in China is forecast to jump by 50% to 1.7m units in 1996, the Xinhua news agency said, quoting a national survey which estimated sales value of personal computers up 47% at $2,994m in 1996 from last year. Demand for small computers other than personal computers would also increase because of a rising number of key projects in the fields of finance, insurance, foreign trade, power industry and education. Production of workstations, servers and products related to networks and databases would also rise, Xinhua said. With between three and four personal computers for every 100 households in major cities, sales of software are expected to rise by some 40% in 1996.
