Desperate to own Apple’s new iPad2, a Chinese lad reportedly sold off one of his kidneys to get money for the gadget.
Identified by his surname, "Zheng", the 17-year-old boy sold the kidney after reading an advertisement that offered cash to anyone willing to donate a kidney.
"I wanted to buy an iPad 2, but I didn’t have the money," the boy told Shenzhen TV.
"When I surfed the Internet I found an advert posted online by agent saying they were able to pay RMB20,000 to buy a kidney."
Zheng said that his kidney was removed in a surgery at a local hospital in Chenzhou in Hunan Province.
The hospital paid Zheng RMB22,000 (£2,080) and discharged him after three days.
However, on reaching home the boy confessed to his mother about the surgery, who reported the matter to police.
His mother said, "When he came back, he had a laptop and a new Apple handset."
"I wanted to know how he had got so much money and he finally confessed that he had sold one of his kidneys."
The doctors and the phone numbers have not been traced. The hospital mentioned by Zheng has dismissed the allegation as well.
