China’s telecommunications capacity will double between now and the end of the century, the Xinhua news agency quoted Ministry of Posts &Telecommunications officials as saying. Telephone switching capacity will increase by 79m lines to a total of 150m lines by 2000 with telephone subscribers will increasing to 123m in 2000 from 78.7m in 1995. It said the number of long-distance telephone lines would be raised to 2.8m, with long-distance telephone exchange capacity hitting 6m lines. The officials were quoted as saying that China would invest $60,000m in post and telecommunications fixed assets by 2000, including $13,200m in infrastructure, and $46,700m technical renovation.
