China will import $4,000m of telephone exchanges and PABXs over the 1990-95 period, the Xinhua news agency quoted the deputy general manager of a major Sino-Japanese joint venture in the field as saying: Ji Beijun, deputy general manager of Tianjin NEC Telecommunications Co, said that since 1981, China has imported 30m lines and to meet its target of 10% availability of phones for Chinese by 2000, will have to install switchboards with at least 10m lines each year; demand will be met by both local production, some by joint ventures, and some imports using state loans.
