China will replace outdated analog equipment with digital technology on all rural telecommunications networks in its eastern provinces within two years, the Xinhua news agency said. The digital networks would be expanded to rural areas in China’s central provinces by the year 2000, but it would take longer to replace analog equipment in more backward western regions, the agency said but gave no details. It added that China would boost investment in telecommunications projects and satellite ground stations in remote areas populated by ethnic minorities.
