China’s Ministry of Information Industry (MII) has chosen seven priority information technology sectors for development during the country’s tenth Five-Year Plan which runs from 2001 to 2005. The MII will focus its efforts on development an integrated circuit manufacturing industry and boosting production and quality of electronic products, telecommunication products, computer and networking products, digital video equipment, and software, according to a ministry official. He said the information sector should strive to generate a gross output value of two trillion yuan ($242bn) by 2005, and should also boost domestic research and development as despite the sophistication of China’s products most of the core technology is imported.
