CHINA CRACKS DOWN ON PIRACY

China has shut 39 factories and production facilities producing pirated compact audio and video disks since September, a US trade official who asked not to be identified, told Dow Jones & Co. He said the Chinese authorities had arrested more than 250 people in an ongoing crackdown on counterfeiting of intellectual property rights and that in one community where the problem was especially pronounced, top municipal officials received prison terms of between four and 15 years.
