By CBR Staff Writer

Fujitsu has said that the National Bureau of Statistics of China in Beijing (NBSC) used scanners and software of the company for the recently concluded sixth National Census Project.

NBSC used 1,700 fi-Series large-volume document scanners and Chinese OCR software which were furnished by the Fujitsu Group.

Every ten years the government of China conducts a nationwide census. This year, NBSC concluded China’s sixth National Census Project, which spanned 1.3 billion people. NBSC released the results of the project on 28 April 2011.

The Fujitsu Group contributed to the project by providing NBSC with scanners of the fi-Series and Chinese OCR software.

The OCR technology that was used in this project was specially developed by Fujitsu Research & Development Centre (FRDC). This software can process difficult-to-recognise, handwritten Chinese names at an accuracy exceeding 99.4%, said Fujitsu.

FRDC also developed the OCR technology which was used in China’s 2nd National Agricultural Census in 2006.
