CHIGAGO AREA BELL CUSTOMERS BACK ON THE PHONE AGAIN

Ameritech’s Illinois Bell unit finally got the last of its Chicago area customers who were knocked out by the fire at its fibre optic distribution back on the phone again over the weekend – but the fire threatens to cost it dear because AT&T put in microwave dishes at 25 of its major customers in the area to bypass the local phone system altogether, and MCI Communications did the same for another six – at a cost of $60,000 per dish; disaster recovery insurance pays off for one Illinois Bell customer – see page four, inside.
