The agreement, which brings together a leading academic medical center and the leading provider of healthcare IT in the US, will leverage both companies’ respective aims to research, develop and deliver the latest technological advances in medicine.

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) has a long history of innovation and delivering emerging information technology solutions, said Dan Drawbaugh, UPMC’s chief information officer. Through collaborations like this one, we can help transform the delivery of healthcare industry-wide while creating new revenue to support UPMC’s core clinical and research mission.

The initiative’s board of directors, with equal representation from both companies, will oversee the selection and development of projects. The shared efforts may include innovations in supply chain, eMedicine and community health.

We are excited to collaborate with this industry-leading organization to develop new ways to elevate healthcare delivery around the world, said Neal Patterson, Cerner chairman and CEO.

While UMPC were previously involved in a year-old initiative with IBM, this joint venture is the first of its kind for Cerner.

Since 1995, Cerner has invested more than $1.2 billion in research and development and plans to invest a comparable amount over the next five years. Likewise, UPMC is consistently recognized as a leader in adopting new technologies to transform the delivery of healthcare. It has been named one of the 100 Most Wired health systems in the US for seven consecutive years by the American Hospital Association.
