CERN, the Centre for European Research into Nucleonics has installed a 64-node, AIX-based POWERparallel Systems SP2 from IBM Corp, and thousands of scientists worldwide, will be able to have access to the SP2 interactivity via the World Wide Web of the Internet, which was developed at CERN: the SP2 will be used to run software that requires one processor concurrently with parallel tasks – about a third of the nodes on CERN’s SP2 will support interactive use; one-third will run serial jobs; and one third will run parallel applications; it will be used in the design of a proposed new particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider, experimental results from which may prove the existence of the Higgs boson to explain the mystery of the wildly different masses of elementary particles.
