The new CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE), Ken Kutaragi, says that home entertainment devices, not PCs, are forcing the pace of technological change in the industry. Kutaragi, the man behind the new Playstation, told Nikkei Microdevices: Home entertainment devices are now not only beginning to drive the semiconductor technology, but also computer architecture and software too. He said that this was the reason that Sony set up its joint chip manufacturing venture with Toshiba Corp in March. We have to make use of the very latest technologies, Kutaragi said, in order to do that we have to have control of the whole process. He also compared Sony with Intel Corp. Current PCs are not driving technology. The reason why only Intel goes on and on pushing its technology forward is because it dominates the market and possesses enough muscle to define PC technologies all by itself.
