Century Data Inc, San Jose, California has plunged into the murky water of DEC VAX add-on products with a family of high-capacity, high-performance 8 fixed disk drives that enable VAX users to add storage and upgrade their systems with plug-compatible replacements for DEC’s 14 RA series fixed disks. The half-rack DS series have embedded SDI interface, and are 100% compatible with DEC controllers. Initial offerings are the 530Mb formatted DS2600 at $14,500 and the $17,100 716Mb DS2800, available in January. A parallel transfer subsystem using the Concept 31 Disk Processor from Storage Concepts, and two Century T2801 multi-channel 692Mb 8 drives can be used with Q-Bus, Unibus or MicroVAX or VAXBI buses and can transfer data at 12Mbytes per second. A four-drive system provides a total unformatted storage capacity of 2.8Gb and comes with five channels for a maximum transfer rate of 12.288Mytes per second. No prices given.
