Cellular telephones are safe for wearers of cardiac pacemakers if used properly, a study group backed by the wireless communications industry said. Wireless Technology Research said users should keep cell phones at least 6 from their pacemakers and, if the phones are turned on, not place them over pacemakers – in breast pockets, for example. It had found the phones to pose no threat to bystanders with pacemakers. The group was formed to study the effect on pacemakers of radio transmissions from cellular phones after reports from Europe and Australia said the phones sped the devices up or slowed them down.
