CELLULAR PHONES DOUBLE IN EUROPE

The number of people using cellular telephones in Europe has more than doubled to 8m over the past three years and is expected to hit 40m by the end of the century, the European Commission said yesterday, but warned that a European-wide approach was now vital and that studies indicate important barriers for maximising market potential: it proposes abolishing exclusive and special rights in the sector, removing all restrictions on the provision of mobile services and full freedom for mobile network operators to operate and develop their own networks across Europe.
