Rumor has it that CBS and USA Networks Inc have their eye on recent IPO About.com, formerly known as The Mining Company. About.com uses human editors to sort internet sites into categories. After a proposed merger between USA Networks and Lycos Inc came to grief in early May (CI No 3,660), USA Networks president Barry Baker said that the company was in talks to buy or merge with another major internet directory. The rumor may account for a 12% increase in About.com’s share price over the trading day.
