In a speech to the Cayman Islands Legislative Assembly, legislator Roy Bodden challenged Cable and Wireless Plc to be more realistic in the fees it charges, said a report Monday in the Caymanian Compass. Specifically, Bodden said, Cayman has the highest internet rates in the world, adding that what C&W charges amounts to extortion. Acknowledging that a review of call rates will be part of a new Telecommunications Law being prepared by the government, Bodden said C&W could provide its good customers with better rates with little or no erosion of its profit. In particular, he said, C&W, as a good corporate citizen, should provide every Caymanian school with complimentary internet access. C&W Cayman charges approximately $0.12 per minute, with moderate discounts thereafter for volume use.
