A Guardian correspondent who was working for Cable & Wireless Plc on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands when Hurricane David struck, relates that the company’s communications centre had an emergency generator that automatically cut in when the mains power failed, and that after this happened several times, he was approached by a neighbour who demanded that the generator be seen to – because every time it starts up the whole neighbourhood suffers a power cut.
