Cascade Communications Corp, Westford, Massachusetts is not going to get left behind in the rush among networking equipment companies to get fatter by eating every available fledgling before it gets grows enough to pose competition, and it has agreed to pay a handsome 3.8 million Cascade shares worth $212.8m for Sahara Networks Inc. Privately-held Sahara develops broadband access products, which sounds like a murky euphemism for cable modems. Cascade will take a write-off of in-process research and development but has not yet put a figure on it.
