Computer Associates International Inc started its new year strong, reporting first-quarter net income that jumped 30% to $155.8m on revenue up 12% at $890.7m. Earnings per share grew 31% to $0.42, beating estimates of $0.39. The Islandia, New York software firm says the results are due in large part to the strong sales of its client/server product line, which rose 51% and accounted for more than 40% of total revenue. In what amounts to a refreshing change for a technology company, CA also says its European operations have seen improved results, particularly for UniCenter TNG, which has received endorsement from the likes of Microsoft Corp and Novell Inc.
