IBM Corp had a reputation for periodically going around and changing the code-names on all its unannounced products – it confused the IBM-watching fraternity, left people unsure that they were talking about the same thing, and made it easier for IBM to trace leaks back to their sources – but sometimes, code-names have to be changed for quite other reasons: Apple Computer Inc doesn’t attempt to keep the lid on its code-names, but the decision to call one of its new PowerPC machines the Carl Sagan (CI No 2,309) did not did go down too well with the Great Man, who apparently complained to the firm, and the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Apple obligingly changed the tag to BHA – there is, of course no truth in the suggestion that this stands for Butt-Head Astronomer.
