Carillion to power communications at Motherwell College’s new campus

Will buy and recycle the legacy equipment being used on the old premises

By CBR Staff Writer

Carillion IT Services has won a five-year contract with Motherwell College to install and maintain Cisco unified communications infrastructure at the college’s new Ravenscraig campus.

Founded in 1967 with 120 teaching staff and 6,500 students, Motherwell College now claims to have 500 staff and 20,000 students. The 200,000 sq ft Ravenscraig campus is expected to be open in August 2009.

Carillion will install an integrated data, voice and video infrastructure as well as a wireless network. The new wireless network is expected to provide the students and staff with a flexible and secure communications platform.

Hugh Logan, principal and CEO of Motherwell College, said: With the new Ravenscraig campus set to provide the local community with a modern and functional environment to inspire learning in the 21st century, we believe the unified communications solution proposed by Carillion IT Services will not only vastly reduce the college’s ongoing maintenance costs, but also support us in delivering the best quality of education in Lanarkshire.

Carillion and Cisco will buy the legacy voice, data, CCTV and video networks being currently used at the old campus, once the college shifts to its new campus. The equipment will be recycled or disposed of in line with the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive).

Noel McNulty, managing director of Carillion IT Services, said: The Cisco unified communication solution will provide the college with a robust and flexible infrastructure able to meet its needs both now and into the future. We are also delighted to continue contributing towards Carillons’ status as one of the greenest companies in the UK with this project.

In the last quarter of 2008, Carillion was selected by Carlisle College to install an integrated Cisco IP telephony system including 250 handsets.
